Our Story

Twenty-two years ago Rose cleared her kitchen table, pulled out her mother's sewing machine, and the two of us started cutting into a pile of cotton scraps neither of us could bear to throw out. It was meant to be a Sunday hobby. It turned into Hattie & Rose, and into a great many late evenings and an unreasonable quantity of thread.

We never set out to run a shop. We made bags for ourselves, then for friends, then for the friends of friends, and at some point there were more orders than Sundays. So we kept going.

Every bag is quilted by hand

Panel by panel, from cotton, then lined and finished by hand. That is why no two are quite the same, and why the stitching holds up to a full tote of library books week after week. We reinforce the straps where the weight actually sits, because that is where a bag gives out first.

We pick prints the way our customers do: because one of them makes you smile.

Why everything is 60% off

We are slowing down now. Fewer hours at the machines, more hours in the garden. What we are left with is a workroom full of bags that were made to be carried, not stacked on a shelf.

So every bag in the shop is 60% off, and we are covering the shipping. Consider it a thank-you to every woman who has carried one of ours over these twenty-two years.

If it is not right

Send it back within 30 days and we refund it in full. No photographs, no forms, and we will not ask you to justify yourself.
